Happy 9th Birthday to the Co-op!

The Co-op is 9 years old on Saturday June 6!

Happy Birthday to Us!
We’ll be celebrating in a couple of ways this year.

First, we’re expanding! We’ve been raising money through Owner Loans for over a year now and have reached our goal! Construction on the store’s expansion began on Monday, June 1st.

We’re also giving away birthday presents – to you! Head over to our Instagram page @friendlycityfoodcoop and enter to win. There will be a different themed gift basket for every day this week and entering is easy!

Co-op Explorers Passport Program 2020

We’re offering another segment of our popular Kids Co-op Explorer Program, redesigned for 2020. This time, your child completes the requirements at home and the only time a parent needs to come to the co-op is to pick up a new kit. Something fun (and educational) for your child while sheltering in place!

The program runs from April 4th through July 11th. There will be a new kit coming out every two weeks, so the first kit will be out on April 4, and the next kit will come out on April 18th. You can pick up your kit anytime during the two week period. Pickup options include asking the cashier for one when you shop in the store, or adding a kit to your online Curbside Pickup order. The dates are listed below for quick reference.

The first kit will come with your child’s passport as well as a letter explaining the program in detail. Each kit will contain a letter filled with fun facts; a seed packet with directions on how to grow the plant; three samples of a fruit or vegetable in dried form; and an activity sheet. The kids will also be encouraged to try some fresh produce at home and there will be a section in the back of the passport for recording that information.

When your child has finished all 8 segments of the passport program, they can bring the completed passport to the co-op and select a prize. If you have questions about the program, email Kari@friendlycity.coop

Kit #8 – the final kit – is now out. Get yours soon!

Making Masks for Mardi Gras

We’re letting the good times roll at the co-op! Visit us on Mardi Gras – Tuesday, February 25th – and bring the kids by the café to make a Mardi Gras mask with us.

Expansion Happening HERE!

There will be a limited number of in-store events this year as we work through the process of expanding our co-op to make it bigger and better than the co-op you now know and love.

Construction is currently scheduled to begin in March of 2020.

Thank you for continuing to shop with us, as we plan to be open throughout the process. It may be a little noisy and dusty at times, but we appreciate your support – without it, there would be no expansion.  And that would be sad.  We’ll have a larger café, a bigger meat and seafood section, more fresh, local produce and an expanded deli/kitchen, when it is all said and done.

Follow us on Facebook and subscribe to our newsletter to stay updated on the process. Thank you for your support!

Owner Appreciation Day

It’s Owner Appreciation Day!

As always, Owners receive 10% off all purchases made today! We’ll also have local vendors with us, sharing samples of their products and answering questions you may have. It’s always nice to know your farmers and producers.

11:00am – 1:00pm
Chestnut Ridge Coffee Roasters
VA Vinegar Works
The Farm at Red Hill- they’ll be sampling their dips and hummuses, some of which we do not carry in the store. There will be an opportunity to vote for your favorite, and the winner will be brought into our produce department!

3:00pm – 5:00pm
Grit Coffee
Mountain Culture Kombucha
Farmstead Ferments will be sampling krauts, pickles, and potentially some of their fermented beverages

On Dec. 4th, from 4-6pm, enjoy a rare opportunity to meet this athlete and role model who is truly making a difference. He’ll be providing a Pop-Up Juice Bar here at the co-op, as well as some insight into possible solutions for some of the big problems we face. He might even give out an autograph!
