What is a Co-op?

It’s a business based on community and sustainability. It’s about using profits to make a difference in the community and the world. Friendly City Food Co-op is a business that’s owned and democratically controlled by a large group of owners right here in our area. We value principles of equality among owners, enrichment of the community, and support of local sustainable products. We are neither profit-driven nor non-profit. Most profit is reinvested to improve the store. Above that, profit may be returned to the owner-members and/or invested back into the community according to vote by the membership. All food cooperatives follow the 7 Cooperative Principles.
We strive to be good stewards of the environment, so very little food is wasted. Produce, sandwiches and salads that are not sold go to a local food pantry. Produce that is not good enough to donate, is given to the New Community Project’s Vine and Fig where it is used for compost in the garden. Some of the resulting produce is then sold back to Friendly City Food Co-op, to complete the sustainable cycle.

Founding our food co-op – How a small group of people made a big difference.

The idea for a full-scale, natural and organic food co-op grocery store in downtown Harrisonburg began in 2006, with a small group of community members who put a premium on using local farmers and producers. Several years of planning, energy and dedicated fundraising efforts allowed the Friendly City Food Co-op to open its doors on June 6th, 2011.

Healthy, wholesome foods, organic produce, and environmentally sound products.

We have an amazing selection of bulk spices and herbs, gourmet cheeses, delicious baked goods from local bakers, locally made soaps and lotions and our very own line of wholesome vitamins. We also have a pleasant seating area so you can enjoy a cup of coffee or soup and salad from our deli.  We’re a friendly, neighborhood grocery store with a distinctively modern twist. We are committed to growing a healthy community food system and when you shop here, you are helping to do the same.

Who can shop at the Co-op?

Anyone can shop and everyone can join. All are welcome to shop at Friendly City Food Co-op, regardless of ownership status.

Why should I become an Owner?

We depend on our owners as well as our shoppers for financial success and stability. A successful co-op requires the cooperation and commitment of the community it serves. For every $1.00 spent in a co-op, over $1.60 is generated in the local economy. Become a Friendly City Food Co-op owner and see how the return on your investment helps to support our community – join today!
