We’ve been rounding up since 2017! See all of the organizations we’ve Rounded Up for below!

Our second quarter Round Up at the Register was for the Backpack Coalition. The Backpack Coalition supplemental weekend food program for school children in need.

With the help of our customers we were able to present them a check for $2,000 to go towards food access to children that need it most! Thank you to everyone who rounded up for supporting this amazing organization.

 

 

 

 

Our first Round Up at the Register for 2023 was for Project GROWS. Project GROWS is an educational, nonprofit organization with a mission to improve the health of children and youth in Staunton, Waynesboro, and Augusta County, Virginia through garden-based education and access to healthy food. The money from this Round Up went to their Project MOBILE food access initiative.

With the help of our customers we were able to present them a check for $2,000 to go towards food access to communities that need it most! Thank you to everyone who rounded up for supporting this amazing organization.

 

 

 

 

Our final Round Up at the Register for 2022 is Generations Crossing. They are a local non-profit intergenerational day care center in the Shenandoah Valley. Their program gives children an opportunity to develop meaningful relationships with adults that build respect and dignity between generations.

With the help of our customers we were able present a check for $2,000 to their organization! Thank you to everyone who rounded up for supporting this awesome organization in our community.

 

 

 

Third quarter Round Up at the Register recipient for 2022 is Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. The food bank provides meals for those in need, and every $1.00 given helps the food bank provide approximately 4 meals for those in need. Our shoppers and staff stepped up this fall and donated BIG!

We were able to present a check to the food bank for $2,000, and we received this note from them which we’d like to share with all who have contributed all these years to our Round Up program:
Since 2011, Friendly City Food Co-op has helped provide 51,672 meals just through the Food Bank alone. That doesn’t even include all of our partners you have also supported over the years. Thanks for helping to provide nutritious food to those experiencing food insecurity.

 

Second quarter Round Up at the Register recipient for 2022 is Sustainability Matters. A Virginia grown grassroots nonprofit, they cultivate community through conservation. Whether it’s planting native wildflower meadows at landfills, teaching novice gardeners to grow their own food, or helping farmers access funding for conservation practices, they empower individuals, families, and communities to help the environment while helping themselves.

Big thanks to our shoppers and staff for rounding up – we were able to award them with a check for $1,500.

 

 

 

The first quarter Round Up at the Register recipient for 2022 is Jubilee Climate Farm. Located in the Shenandoah Valley, the mission of the farm is to create a model for the transformation of agricultural systems to become key solutions to the climate crisis, while providing land access, empowerment, and education for all.

Our shoppers and staff rounded up, and donated, in order to provide a check to them for $1,250.

 

 

 

 

The final Round Up at the Register recipient for 2021 is the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.  The food bank provides meals for those in need, and every $1.00 given helps the food bank provide approximately 4 meals for those in need.

Our shoppers stepped up again during a busy holiday season and enabled us to send a check to the food bank for $1,500.

 

 

 

 

The third quarter Round Up at the Register recipient for 2021 is Open Doors of Harrisonburg – a nonprofit dedicated to providing shelter and support for those experiencing homelessness as well as implementing programs that will help end the cycle of chronic homelessness.

Thanks to our shoppers and staff, we were able to donate $1,250 to their cause.

 

 

 

 

The second quarter Round Up at the Register recipient for 2021, is New Bridges Immigrant Resource Center – a nonprofit providing immigrant representation, healthcare navigation services, and information and resources to help immigrants access community resources.

Thanks to our generous shoppers and staff, we were able to raise $1500 to help them with their mission.

 

 

 

 

The first quarter Round Up at The Register recipient for 2021 is First Step – a local nonprofit that is dedicated to the elimination of domestic violence in our community. They provide emergency shelter, a 24-hour crisis hotline, legal advocacy, financial empowerment, children’s support, and domestic violence counseling.

Thanks to generous donations from our staff and shoppers, we were able to present them with a check for $1500, which included a cash donation and gift cards for their clientele.

 

 

 

The final Round Up at The Register recipient for 2020 was Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. They provide healthy, nutritious food to over 100,000 children, families and individuals in our area.

We were able to give them a check for $1,000, which will provide 4,000 meals to those in need.

 

 

 

 

The second Round Up at The Register recipient for 2020 was the Harriet Tubman Cultural Center, which is an educational and advocacy organization named for the early 19th-century formerly enslaved woman who helped lead others to freedom using a string of safe houses known as the Underground Railroad.

The Co-op was able to present a check to them for $1,250, which will go toward education and outreach in the community.

 

 

 

 

The first Round Up at The Register recipient for 2020 was the Shenandoah Valley Black Heritage Project. The mission of this nonprofit is to learn, share, and illuminate African American history of the Shenandoah Valley.

The Co-op was able to present a check to them for $1,000, which will go toward maintaining the Heritage Center as well as supporting research, their internship program and virtual events.

 

 

 

 

The fourth quarter Round Up at The Register recipient for 2019 was Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. They provide healthy, nutritious food to over 100,000 children, families and individuals in our area.

We were able to give them a donation for $1,000 which included cash and in-kind donations in the form of fresh produce for the food bank.

 

 

 

The 2019 third quarter Round Up at The Register recipient is the Boys & Girls Club of Harrisonburg and Rockingham County. Their mission is “to enable all young people, especially those who need us the most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring and responsible citizens”.

We raised $1,000 through our Round Up at The Register and it will be used to support the three areas of programming: academic success, character-building, and healthy lifestyles.

 

 

 

The second quarter 2019 Round Up at The Register recipient for 2019 is Strength in Peers. This nonprofit is comprised of individuals who have overcome substance abuse and mental health and trauma related challenges. They offer hope, support and advocacy for those seeking recovery.

The funds raised, $800, will go toward helping incarcerated individual with reentry into their community, folks struggling to find food, jobs, homes, and those who need support for addiction and trauma related issues.

 

 

 

The first 2019 Round Up at The Register recipient for 2019 is Soil Cycles. This nonprofit provides a bicycle-powered food scrap pick-up service that makes composting easy, accessible, and affordable for residences, restaurants, and businesses in Harrisonburg, Virginia. They turn the collected compost scraps into fuel for healthy, locally grown food in our community.

The funds raised, $700, will go toward a new trailer for compost pick-up and equipment purchase and maintenance.

 

 

 

The 2018 fourth quarter recipient for Round Up at the Register is the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank. They provide healthy, nutritious food to more than 106,000 children, families and individuals in our area every month. The check for $1,200 will supply the BRAFB with funds to provide 4,800 meals to those in need.

We are so pleased to have the support of our staff and customers whose generosity enables us to give to the many organizations and businesses who are making a difference in our community.

 

 

 

Our third quarter recipient is Our Community Place. Our Round Up at the Register raised $1,000 for the installation of solar panels on their roof. The solar panels (to be installed by Give Solar) will reduce overhead costs by $3,000 each year, while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions and reliance on fossil fuels. The mission of Our Community Place is to build a safe, loving community of restoration and hope for all, especially those facing homelessness and other adverse experiences.

The check was presented to Executive Director, Sam Nickels, on October 16, 2018.

 

 

 

The second Round Up recipient for 2018 is the Dallard/Newman House located in Harrisonburg’s Northeast Neighborhood. It is one of few African-American homes to escape demolition during Urban Renewal and is a valuable resource in our community. The funds will go toward preserving this historic home, now listed with the Virginia Department of Historic Resources, and turning it into a museum for all to appreciate.

The Co-op was able to raise $1,000 to assist them with the preservation and the check was presented to them on July 5, 2018.

 

 

The first Round Up recipient for 2018 is Blacks Run Forest Farm. The riparian nursery grows trees along the Blacks Run Stream that not only serve as an orchard and welcoming park, but also provide air conditioning, carbon converting and watershed restoring. They are passionate about the health of Blacks Run and all those who live in its watershed.

The Co-op was able to raise $1,225 to assist them with this undertaking.

 

 

 

 

Our first Round Up recipient for 2017 was the Harrisonburg Farmers Market’s SNAP Matching Funds Program. We are pleased to announce we were able to present a check for $1,000 to the Harrisonburg Farmer’s Market on Saturday, April 1, 2017.

 

 

 

 

 

Our second Round Up recipient for 2017 is Harrisonburg Public School’s Mobile Cafe summer meals program. We presented a check for $1,500 to them on June 16.

 

 

 

 

 

The third quarter Round Up recipient is On the Road Collaborative’s Emerging Chefs program. Youth who participate in the Emerging Chefs program not only learn how to cook, but also learn about local food systems and food service skills. They received a $1,500 check on September 8.

 

 

 

 

 

The 2017 final quarter Round Up recipient is the co-op’s own GIVE FRESH program. All monetary donations will go to purchase fresh, local and/or organic produce for those who cannot afford it.

We raised over $900 in funds that will go to purchase this produce for those in need.
