Artist Statement:

I grew up as a backyard naturalist in Rockingham County, always collecting interesting leaves, turning over stones, and finding myself especially enamored by the array of tiny creatures. Over time, I acquired an unnecessarily large repertoire of random bug facts (ask me about the life cycle of mantises, the diet of reddish brown stag beetles, or what baby snails look like).

Now, I illustrate various bug species, many of which are favorites from my childhood. Perhaps they are ones you’ve spotted in your own garden! I like to draw upon their personalities, giving them things like sweaters, scarves, and glasses (mostly because I am easily humored and find it amusing to imagine bugs in human clothes). I hope my illustrations inspire you to engage with the tiny world of life in your own backyard!

When I’m not drawing bugs, I am a teacher with Shenandoah Language Academy. I teach Spanish to K-12 and adult students.
