As an owner of the Friendly City Food Co-op, you have governance rights – including the right to vote in a Board of Directors election and the right to run for a seat on the Board. If you’re a co-op owner who’s enthusiastic about making a direct impact on your community and co-op, consider running for an open board seat in 2024!

Policy Governance:

How Our Board Governs Our Grocery Store

Our Board uses a method called Policy Governance. Simply put, we set clear goals for the organization and say what actions are not allowed. We also have rules for how the Board and the General Manager should work together. The Board’s main job is to define expectations through rules and then let the General Manager handle everything related to achieving those goals and avoiding certain actions. If the General Manager meets our goals and follows the rules, the Board is happy. We focus on our role, and the General Manager keeps us informed by regularly sharing how they are following the rules we’ve set.
