Our newest Co+op Explorers for Kids program will be all about Upcycling. When you Upcycle, you are creating something from what you already have, rather than using new materials. It’s a sustainable and creative way to have fun, and make something useful with your kids!

These classes will be held on the patio for ages 2-12. Currently, there is no sign-up required.
Classes are held from 11 am to 12 noon.

SCHEDULE:

Saturday, March 23

FABRIC- We’ll take a look at fabric and where it comes from, make a t-shirt bag (if possible, please bring a t-shirt from home to use), and there will be free time to make things using supplies from the Co-op Table.

Saturday, April 16
PAPER- We’ll made paper! And learn about where it comes from. Various other paper crafts as well.

Saturday, May 21
PLASTIC- We will learn more about what plastic is, and how it affects the environment. Try your hand at making Plarn (plastic yarn), Jump Ropes, and Jewelry

Saturday, June 18
LIDS- Lids cannot be recycled, so they are perfect for upcycling.
We’ll be making art with an assortment of lids. There will also be a creative challenge posed and anyone who comes up with a solution will receive a prize.

Saturday, July 9
TOYS AND TRINKETS- This time we’ll take those no-longer-used toys, charms, watches, game pieces, or trinkets you may have around the house, and turn them into something new! We’ll have items here for you to work with, and you are encouraged to bring things of your own – in the true spirit of upcycling.

If you completed the Friendly City Food Co-op Lid Challenge, posed in the Upcyling Lids class, please bring your solution with you when you come. Prizes will be awarded for anyone who brings in a solution.

Saturday, August 13
CARDBOARD AND BOOKS- We’ll be taking those no-longer-used books and turn them into treasure boxes. Cardboard can be upcycled into many things – light fixtures, shelving, attractive storage boxes, cardboard villages and more!

Saturday, September 10
RECYCLED UPCYCLING-
Join us for an Upcycling “Maker’s Space” where you can use any of the materials from previous classes and make something new with them. Use as many items as you like, and use your imagination to create something new. This class may run longer, if the participants are busy making!
